What is System Integration?

Modern buildings have many subsystems, for instance, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), security, energy monitoring, equipment monitoring, elevators, fire safety, and production processes, to name a few. Most contemporary systems use "smart" devices that are capable of communicating over a network using a specific "language" that we call protocols. System Integration is the process of bringing all these systems together into a single, easy to use interface and also to share information across the different network protocols. These network protocols include BACnet, LonTalk (LON), MODBUS, and proprietary protocols such as Johnson Controls' N2 and Carrier's CCN.
